Last week's Top Site survey brought in a good response and,
I believe, interesting results. Clear leader was Travelocity
followed closely by Lonely Planet with Expedia coming in
third. There then followed 2 further groups of sites with
not alot between them, namely The Trip, Preview Travel,
TravelWeb and Leisureplan. Ahead of the many sites who
received single votes were the final pack, including
Internet Travel Network, City Net, travlang, Best Fares and
Flifo.
So what does it all mean? Search me! :) Two of the top three
sites offer booking facilities, although if the on-line
booking results are anything to go by, most users are
testing the sites functionalities rather than booking,
leading to Expedia's controversial decision to exclude
repeat 'offenders'. Yet, even if we accept that there is
more looking than booking at the moment, there is certainly
great interest in booking sites.
Has anything changed in the past year? Let's have a look a
the October report from /TRAVMAG/ in 1996:
/TRAVMAG/ Top Five (spontaneous recall) OCTOBER
Placings are based on non-cumulative monthly figures.
1= Travelocity / 1= Lonely Planet/ 2. Virtual Tourist
3. TravelWeb / 4= 1travel 4= City Net / 5. Eaasy Sabre
In October (96) Travelocity has maintained a strong position
but Lonely Planet has also enjoyed a recovery. Virtual
Tourist hits its highest placing ever and TravelWeb climbs
again. NEW ENTRY at 4= is 1travel (http://www.1travel.com),
a new a popular travel hub. City Net still strong.
Eaasy Sabre move in at 5. NEW ENTRY for an old site, but
another indication, with 1travel, of how booking sites are
raising their profile.
Bubbling under this month are Fodor's, Conde Naste, Hyde
Travel, and Time Out, Holiday-Rentals and World Travel
Guide. [Footnote: Travelocity had only just hit top slot
after launch earlier in summer 96]
