Top animal exhibits in Las Vegas
Las Vegas is well known as a gambling destination. The city is home to some of the world’s top hotels and casinos, with most of the action taking place on the famed Las Vegas strip. However, despite having to be over 21 to gamble in the American state of Nevada, Las Vegas is also a fun place for families to take their holidays as there’s far more than just endless rows of slot machines and black jack tables. Hotels have huge entertainment complexes, with some even having theme parks and significant animal exhibits. Here’s a rundown of four great animal exhibits that are well worth a visit if you’re heading to Las Vegas.
4. Lion Habitat at MGM Grand
The world’s largest hotel building is a tourist destination in its own right. It is home to a 16,000 square metre gaming floor (the biggest in Las Vegas), sixteen restaurants, and numerous shops and night clubs. It also has a large glass sided lion habitat inside the casino where up to six lions roam around every day. It is possible to see the lions playing with various toys that the trainers have given them during the day and admission is complimentary.
3. Aquarium at the Silverton Hotel
This collection of aquariums includes an 117,000 artificial reef, and is also home to an incredible array of sea life. Four thousand tropical fish from around the world, three species of sting ray and three species of shark all swim in the waters behind the glass. There are also two five hundred gallon jellyfish aquariums complete with surreal LED lighting, alongside other exhibits. For a special show, watch one of the regular feeding sessions throughout the day when the aquarium’s marine biologists get into the tank. They have special full face communications which make them able to speak to the audiences of the show. It’s all within the western themed Silverton Hotel and Casino located off Blue Diamond Road and the entrance is free to the public.
2. Mandalay Bay Shark Reef
Within the thirty storeys of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino is the third largest aquarium tank in North America. At a size of 1.6 million gallons, this huge tank reaches depths of 22 feet and houses more than 1200 species of sharks, exotic fish, and sea turtles; there is also a rare display of five golden crocodiles – and there are only around a dozen of this species still in existence! There’s the opportunity to come face to face with piranhas in the Amazon predators exhibition, and then a menacing array of sharks in the large shark reef. Entrance costs $15.95 for adults and $10.95 for children 12 years and younger. Children under four are admitted free.
1. Siegfried and Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat
A whole range of exotic creatures await at this mind blowing exhibit. A palm shaded sanctuary is home to some of the Earth’s rarest and most exotic creatures. There are extremely rare snow white tigers, striped white tigers, heterozygous tigers, white lions, and even an Asian elephant. While they are all at home within the different exhibits on most days, the stunning world famous Siegfried and Roy show, which combines magic tricks with these stunning animals, is not to be missed. In addition to all of this there’s also a 2.5 million gallon Dolphin Habitat that is home to a family of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for children aged 4 – 12, and free for children under four. For an extra fee you can b#ecome an animal trainer for the day, or get VIP treatment.
